Come On, Get Happy! … At Work?

By August 27, 2018 No Comments

Considering we spend most of our waking hours at work, it makes sense to want to find happiness in our careers.

I would love to be excited to wake up and go every day. I want to feel like my work is making a difference. Better work-life balance…Yes! PLEASE.

I really WANT all those things… but I have no idea where to start. Sound familiar?

It is the question I am asked most often…

“Megan, you have always found so much happiness in your career. How do you keep coming across these exciting and rewarding opportunities? You are so LUCKY!” With a large smile on my face, I am internally eye rolling on the inside. (Sorry!… I don’t believe in luck happening TO you, I believe you make your own luck.)

So, the truth is, it’s not luck. And, you might not like this answer at first, but stick with me, so I can explain.

It is not the roles I “happened to find”, it is actually what I choose to “bring to the role” personally.

Joy, Enthusiasm, Positivity…FUN!!

Now, has every day, within every position I’ve had been perfectly amazing and joyful? … No, of course not. But I have always found happiness in each role I have tackled. Why?

At the end of the day, what makes me HAPPY in my career, is being true to myself (aka authentic) regardless of my environment, being challenged to stretch my skills on the regular, and being able to help others do the same. I strive in EVERY role to serve others’ needs with a rocking work ethic, while bringing them enthusiastic positive vibes. For me it’s about casting vision, challenging growth, and CELEBRATING wins…BIG time!

So, the way I see it… like it or not, the answer to finding happiness in your career is within YOU. It is what you bring to the table.

You might be thinking, well great! Isn’t that easier said than done… And obviously that is what I would want, but it’s NOT happening. If that is the case, then it is time to spend some time looking within yourself…

My suggestion is to start by asking yourself these 3 questions:

  • What do you personally value most? Does your career allow you to be true to these values?
  • What are your strengths? Does your career allow your skills to shine?
  • What do you love to do? Does your career interest you? Are you fired up?
If you didn’t check yes to all 3, spend some quality time reflecting. Take the time for yourself to dig down deep. And if you need help diving in, let’s schedule a call and talk through it together. Happiness is just around the corner!
